Pumpkin Red Yellow & Black

Last night I sat down to watch TV, nothing but murder on it, had no creative motivation so I just decided to sit at my desk.  Once there I thought I'd just get a couple of paints out with no final outcome in mind and see what happens.  I put some Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow and Black acrylic on the pallet and just tried to make as many different colours as I could, then the pumpkin said "paint me"!!...  so I did.  I'm amazed at the amount of colours derived from two primaries and black.  Next time I think I'll try it with the cool yellow and red, i.e. Light (Hansa) Yellow and Crimson Alizarin.

Pumpkin

Pumpkins are so wonderful in shape, colour and texture and fantastic to draw and paint.  My drawing lecturer is having us focus on structure and how to use elipses in organic shapes so drawing the pumpkin was perfect practice.    This drawing is of the same pumpkin just moved a little each time drawn.  Mediums are charcoal, pastel pencil and soft pastels.

'Pumpkin' A3, black pastel, white gouache and peppermint tea

When I was drawing this it was late and I was too tired to get some water to make a wash so I just used my left over peppermint tea, poured some out onto a plastic bag and dipped my black soft pastel into it and dragged it along the paper on its side and it made a fabulous rich black mark with a tinge of yellowy green from the tea.
